“Put me in coach, I’m ready to play,” is perhaps most famously known as a lyric from John Fogerty’s classic song, “Centerfield.” However, it is an appropriate metaphor to describe the transition from youth to adulthood, and the physical and emotional readiness we hope to gain from our transformative adolescent experience. This evolution of maturity is on full display in this celebration of Leominster’s amazing and unprecedented run of 3 consecutive Massachusetts Babe Ruth League state championships from 1971-1973.

In A Place in Time: Youth, Community & Baseball, local author Mark Lefebvre tells a cautionary story about the role of a community, its neighborhoods and schoolyards, where kids had safe places and opportunities to thrive. It is a story about sports and other recreational activities that provide kids with the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to cope and succeed as adults. But sadly, this story is also about the erosion of community at a time when we as a society perhaps need it most.
